Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Maybe you have experienced typical talk therapy as getting you only so far in your path toward healing. Have you wondered, "Why does my body still react to trauma triggers when I've done so much therapy already?" Or maybe you sometimes feel like you have certain patterns of emotion or behavior that don't feel like they can change, but just feel like this is always how it's been.
This is where somatic (body-focused) therapy can move your progress forward. I am certified in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP), a somatic therapy. Research has made it very clear that our thoughts, emotions, and bodies all join together to participate in the experiences of our lives. Whenever you have any life experience, you not only have your thoughts about it and the related feelings, but your body is experiencing them, too. This is why it is important to incorporate the whole person in the therapy, not just what you think or feel about what's happened in your life. This can also explain why it is that a traumatic even that happened a while ago can still seem all too present with you now. SP can help you learn why you do the things you do and how change can happen. Through this deep form of work, you can find relief for your over-active nervous system as well as new capacities for coping in the world and way of relating to others. Some situations in life can't be easily changed but you can learn how to respond differently within them to reduce your suffering.
My work also includes other mindfulness-related approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills training.
